It's so much easier today to get the tastes of old-fashioned homemade cakes without all the old-fashioned fuss. Start with a spice cake mix, add fresh pears, caramel topping and mmmm... Is that old-fashioned enough?

What You'll Need

  • 1 (18.25-ounce) package spice cake mix
  • 2 fresh pears, pared, halved, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

What to Do

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9- x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

  2. Prepare cake mix according to package directions and pour into prepared baking dish. Arrange sliced pears in 2 rows on top of cake batter.

  3. Bake 32 to 35 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool 20 minutes.

  4. In a medium bowl, mix together brown sugar, flour, water, and butter to make caramel glaze. Spoon glaze over cake and sprinkle with walnuts. Let cool completely.

Notes

  • If you'd like to vary the taste of the cake a bit, use pecans instead of walnuts for a Louisiana praline touch!

Will carrot cake mix work in this recipe

Does anyone know for sure how to prepare the glaze? Thanks.

Please refer to Step 4 for directions to prepare the glaze. Enjoy!

I would like to know if this type of cake can be frozen and used later (without the topping of course) ?

Yes, you can bake this cake and freeze it. Then, add the glaze when you are ready to serve the cake. Great question, enjoy!

Likingit2 Pears were plentiful this year and tasted great!! Very sweet so this is a fantastic recipe if you like spice cake and pears. Caramel topping turns out great!!

I have not made this, but I believe that the glaze should be cooked for a little while before using, since it contains flour.

By the look of the picture the pears are "in" the batter not on top. Do they sink in? Or do i pour 1/2 batter top with pears and pour rest of batter? KD

No need to mix the pears in the batter. Some of them will sink into the batter, so there are pears in the cake as well as on top. Thank you for your question!

This looks totally awesome!! Pears are in season. I hope nobody steals the pears from MY MOM'S PEAR TREE AGAIN!!!!
