There's nothing like a Good Ol' Chocolate Cake to put everybody in a good mood, and this homemade chocolate cake recipe has one secret ingredient that makes it extra-moist. In fact, it's so moist, you don't even need any frosting!

What You'll Need

  • 1 cup water
  • 3 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar

What to Do

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9- x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine water, chocolate, and butter; bring to a boil, then remove from heat and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, combine remaining ingredients; blend with an electric mixer on medium speed until well combined. Stir in chocolate mixture; mix well and let sit about 10 minutes, or until thickened. Pour into baking dish.
  4. Bake 30 to 35 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool.

Try adding cinnamon to taste to chocolate cakes or pudding!!!! What a treat!!!

I made this cake this evening as an afterthought, to have dessert after dinner and for the weekend. It was put together and in the oven in no time. It is very moist and chocolatey. This will become one of the favorites.

Baking soda and vinegar are the agents that make the cake rise. If there was no vinegar the cake would be flat.

No icing recipe included

My Mom would melt sugar, butter, and milk in a sauce pan and bring to a boil for a minute and pour over the cake while hot in the pan, it will get firm when cool, very good with chocolate cakes. I don't know the measurements as she didn't measure. Use you good judgement as what it will take to cover.

What is the vinegar for? This cake sounds really good.

Not sure but my recipe for chocolate 'crazy cake' also calls for two Tbsp. vinegar & it's delicious! this also sounds good

Mixing vinegar and milk creates could probably just substitute buttermilk for the milk and vinegar combo...
