Yum! Orange Dream Cake that tastes like it was made from scratch. You may start this off with a cake mix, but nobody will ever know!

What You'll Need

  • 1 (18.25-ounce) package orange cake mix
  • 1 (4-serving) package orange-flavored gelatin
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cup water
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 3/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 (4-serving) package instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 (8-ounce) can crushed pineapple, drained
  • 1 (8-ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed

What to Do

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9- x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

  2. In a large bowl, beat together cake mix, gelatin mix, eggs, oil, and water until well blended; pour into prepared baking dish.

  3. Bake about 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Remove from oven and let cool.

  4. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, make frosting by beating cream cheese and orange juice. Add pudding mix and sugar; beat well.

  5. Stir in pineapple until well combined then beat in whipped topping. Frost cooled cake, cover loosely, and chill at least one hour before serving. Store leftovers in refrigerator.

Garnishing Tip

If you'd like, just before serving, decorate your Orange Dream Cake with canned mandarin oranges that have been well drained.

my husband and kids love this cake, easy to make .they want it for any holiday and birthday Bobbie

It is not often I start a cake from a mix and was not aware that there was an orange cake mix. Upon reading the directions here, I googled orange cake mix and now I know what to look for. I want to try it just because the cake mix is orange flavor.

A single layer cake with a lot of flavor. I love the topping and will probably use it to top other cakes in the future.

This looks so delicious! I can't wait to try it.

Delicious. Orange flavor was refreshing and the "frosting" was really good. Not too sweet. Very moist cake.

I found a Duncan Hines yellow cake that is 16.2 oz. and calls for 3 eggs. Do I just follow the instructions on the box, use the 3 eggs called for and just add the gelatin to it?

Hello! You can follow the instructions on the box, but you will still need to include the amount of water we have listed in the recipe instructions (1-1/2 cups), since this is needed for the gelatin. Enjoy!

any idea how many carbs per serving?

was wondering if i could make the orange cake from scratch or is there another recipe i dont use box mixes thank you

Hello! If you'd like to make this from scratch you can begin with a homemade white cake recipe, and omit the eggs, oil, and water, which we use to make the boxed cake mix. You will still need to include the orange-flavored gelatin, as this gives the cake an orangey flavor. Enjoy!

This was sooo good. Loved it and got rave reviews on it.

Only gave this 4 stars because it does not make itself! Make this at the beach & did not bring any home! Making again today for Father's Day.

Delicious, and better the older it is.

Why can't I read any of the posts? 1 will come up, I move my cursor and it goes away. Do Not Like this new site!

THE RECIPE FOR THE Orange Dream Cake, packaging is longer 18.25 it is cut back to 16.??. Does it make a difference when making this cake???? Namloc27@Aol.com

Nope, the cake will still come out great!

This is as wonderful an orange cake as you can get. Very refreshing!

Do you have to use a "dish" or can you use a pan then turn it out on a cake plate and frost it. It has been many a year that I made it and I don't know what I used to bake it in.

This is the best orange cake I have ever eaten. I rate it 5 stars.

A wonderful cake! Very moist and doesn't taste like it came from a box. I suggest using a better grade of orange juice like the "Simply" products. I substituted part of the water for OJ (1/2 cup) and I also added a small can of mandarin oranges - well drained and cut up. YUM!

Went we vacationed in Alaska 2 years ago, they served a "low calorie" orange cake on board ship. I made this recipe from Mr. Food and it is w o n d e r f u l!!! Have made it twice in fact.

Need to substitute something for pineapple - how about mandarin oranges?

I use citrus (lemon lime) pop instead of water when making bought cake mixes. My husband started me using it and we love it. No matter what kind of cake.

Does this not alter the taste of the cake or make it sweeter?

Where would I find a orange cake mix. Never seen one here in California.

This is Great!!! 100% family approval. Looks great also. AWESOME!!!

sounds good

EXCELLANT CAKE!!!

love love love!

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!

This WAS very good but the pineapple cream cake is over the TOP!! We Loved IT!! Everyone should try it!!

How do I find the Pineapple Cream Cake recipe?

So easy to make & Delish!!!

I made this cake about 6 yrs ago for thanksgiving and my husbands dad went wild over it. He said it was the best cake he'd ever eaten. Everyone wanted the recipe, and I wouldn't give it out, and then I lost it. I searched forever trying to find it again. Now, here it is! However, there was one difference in the recipe I had, and it called for yellow cake mix and manderin oranges. Either way, you can't beat this recipe!

Were the manderine oranges used in place of the pineapple?

what was the amount of mandrin oranges you used with the yellow cake mix

This cake is delish! Took it to work.....they loved it!

Sounds delish,,,, where does one find an orange cake mix??????

Any Larger Grocery Store Carries Orange Cake Mix. Duncan H-Betty C-Etc. The cake is very good, "Thank-You" for submitting it.

Duncan Hines stopped making orange cake mix, but now is available again; however if you need to use white or yellow cake mix then add orange extract. It works the same.

I have made this cake many times! I have never been able to find orange cake mix and have just substituted yellow cake mix. Very tasty! People always ask me for the recipe! I also garnish the top with mandarin oranges!

Safeway in Wash State just started selling them.

Also good replacing the orange with lemon.
