How to Store Onions

Onions can be a background ingredient in many dishes, like Barbecued Beef Hoagies and Cheesy Onion Potatoes, but can also be the star of the dish, like in Creamy Onions.  Whether they are a full-feature ingredient, or an ingredient that just adds a little extra oomph, onions live in every at-home chef's kitchen.  In this article, we'll talk about how to store onions properly so you'll have a fresh, crunchy onion to dig into every time!

Storing Onions

  • Onions should be stored in a dark and dry location. They will keep for 4-6 weeks! 
  • Cut onions should be securely wrapped in plastic, and can be stored in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks.

 

Just finished making our Classic French Onion Soup, and realized you have a few onions left over? Don't let them go to waste! Slice or dice your onion up, place it inside sealed plastic baggies, take as much air out as you can, and stick it in the freezer! (The next time you need 'em for a recipe, you won't have to bother with cutting onions!)
