Hello - We have not tried making this pie with Karo before, but we believe it may work. However, it will result in a different flavor as the molasses adds a lot of flavor to the pie. If you do try it, please let us know how it turned out!

All molasses is not created equal. Been a long time since I've seen King syrup but if memory serves, it's basically corn syrup. DON't use this. There are two different types of molasses typically found at the supermarket, light and dark, USE the dark molasses. Grandma's is a good variety if you can get it.

It is indeed shoo fly pie. I live in Quakertown PA, many fine PA dutch cooks here! By the way if ljhayes4 9217397 is looking for healthy low calorie food don't go near Amish PA dutch foods. Basically farm-working class diet!

Amen jmhar1! Thank God everything on here is NOT healthy, low calorie. I can't think of a better way to go than with a slice of shoo fly. Some recipes are not for everyday, but a little variety shouldn't kill us occasionally. Thanks to everyone, for all the delishious recipes that I get reguarly.

buttThis sounds like Shoo-Fly Pie of the old days. Only thing in it that is good 4 U is the egg! Too much sugar, butter, carbs, etc.

On your recipe "slow Cooked checken and Rice: define 1 1/2 pounds of chicken breast? How do I determine when I don't have a scale to weigh the meat? I just need to know if it's 4 or 5 medium size frozen breasts so I know how much to thaw out. thanks

quakertown is not geographically near Pennsylvania Dutch country. it is directly north of philadelphia, not southwest of philadelphia which is where the Pennsylvania Dutch live.

There are many Pennsylvania Dutch descendants in the Quakertown region where I lived for about 5 years. I am originally from Philadelphia and while geography is not my strong suit, I believe Quakertown is northwest of Philadelphia. It was a lovely place to live and the people are very friendly. Shoo-fly pie was never one of my favorites though.

"A rose by any other name, would smell as sweet". If this recipe provider wishes for it to be called Quakertown Crumb Pie, I'm all for it. And by the way, I'm close enough to "Pennsylvania Dutch Country" that the "horse & buggy swerve", is a practiced driving maneuver.
