COOK TIME

In honor of Mr. Food and his love of traditions, we combined his love of breaking bread with family and his favorite way to use Challah bread which was to make a grilled Monte Cristo sandwich. We know he'd be proud his legacy has carried on and if you listen closely enough, you can hear those four words we loved hearing him say so much... "OOH, IT'S SO GOOD!!"

What You'll Need

  • 6 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 pound thinly sliced deli turkey
  • 1/2 pound thinly sliced deli ham
  • 8 (1-ounce) slices Swiss cheese
  • 16 slices egg bread (challah)
  • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter

What to Do

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk eggs and milk until well combined.

  2. Equally divide the turkey, ham, and Swiss cheese on 8 slices of bread. Top with remaining slices of bread.

  3. In a large skillet or on a griddle, melt 1 tablespoon butter over medium heat. Dip two sandwiches, one at a time, in the egg mixture, coating completely. Place in skillet and cook 2 to 3 minutes on each side, or until egg is golden and cheese is melted.

  4. Repeat with remaining sandwiches, adding more butter as needed. Serve sandwiches immediately.

Note

  • If desired, serve with powdered sugar.

awesome

Have enjoyed this sandwich many times and one restaurant we visited suggested it be served with maple syrup

These are even better with a little Thousand Island Dressing slathered on one side of the bread.

I used to get it at a restaurant that has moved from our area. It was making me crazy trying to remember the name of this sandwich, so I was glad to see you bring it back. ry. I believe this restaurant added the dusting with powdered sugar and drizzling with some type of raspberry (maybe cran/rasp?) sauce. So rich it was appetizer, entree and dessert all rolled into one and really serves two.

I haven't made the sandwich yet, but I know it will be so Good!! I watched the tribute to Mr Food. It warmed my heart and brought back so many memories of times I would watch the Channel 7 News (Tyler, Texas) with my grandparents. Thank you for sharing your wonderful memories of a special man. You can get Challah bread at most bakeries these days. I live in Florida, and Publix Supermarket makes it all the time. I have seen it in stores such as BJ's and Target as well. You can also get it at a Jewish Deli and/or Bakery.

I love the sandwich, but I have had it using other types of bread. I think I will try Challah next time I make the sandwich. Thanks.

HI does anyone know where he got the bread from.

Love Monte Cristo sandwitches.

Put the cranberry inside the sandwich,,, then fry.

Delish with strawberry preserves! I love these sandwiches, so good!!

Also good with powered sugar sprinkled on top on each side of sandwich.......

Serve with either raspberry preserves or red current jelly! Yum!!!

Delicious with a maple syrup dip.
