Decadent! The best grilled cheese sandwich I've ever had.

made exactly as written, and unfortunaltely, it was awful. it had way too much cream cheese which made it overly thick texture, not creamy. the taste was also displeasing. obviously, nothing beats the old school grilled cheese made with good ol' sliced cheese. hands down way, way better than this. my sandwich ended up in the trash after only one bite!

I lived off of grilled cheese sandwiches when I was in college and I never had one quite like this one. This ultimate grilled cheese sandwich sounds so good and I cannot wait to try this recipe.

At my house grilled cheese sandwiches are usually severed along with something like soup. With this ultimate grilled cheese sandwich the soup would be the side dish. This recipe sounds decadent.

I have not been able to find 3 oz. packages of cream cheese anymore, I don't think they make it in that size anymore. Has anyone else ha this problem??

Hi there! You are correct, they don't make 3oz packages anymore. The 3 ounces is equivalent to 6 tablespoons. :) I hope that helps! Enjoy.

Oh. My. Heaven on bread! Used a bit less mayo, and sprinkled some bacon bits on it (because I had an almost empty bag) and feasted!

Love this grilled cheese recipe! The only thing I changed was I skipped the garlic powder, we aren't big fans of it. But my family and I ARE big fans of this and many other recipes from the Mr. Food Test Kitchen! Thanks for posting!

Hi Vondie! We're glad you enjoy so many recipes from our site! We hope to bring many more in 2018! Happy New Year!

Thank You! I'm looking forward to another year of more easy delicious recipes! Happy New Year to the hard working crew of Mr. Food Test Kitchens!

I'm always wary of things described as the ultimate since that implies it can never be topped. And usually something even better shortly comes along. All kidding aside, this is a really interesting version of a grilled cheese sandwich. The cream cheese and mayonnaise mixture addition is new to me and is something I'll definitely want to experiment with since the quantity seems to be a bit more than I'd like. This would be great with a slice of deli ham or a few strips of bacon added. Multi-cheese grilled cheese sandwiches are always a favorite of mine.

This is a grilled cheese DELUXE! I was just saying I would like a grilled ham, cheese, and tomato sandwich because my tomato plants are looking so healthy. I don't have any tomatoes to pick yet, so I'll make these sandwiches in the mean time and make them again in the fall with chili.

I found this recipe YEARS ago. It is a favorite of my kids. I made a pot of soup this past week and was planning on making a pan of cornbread to go with it. My 24 year old son insisted on "special" grilled cheese. If you don't use it all, just put it in the fridge. It keeps well!

Have not made this yet but AM GOING TO! I wouldn't if it could not be saved for later. Found the answer further down. THANKS That's a lot of sandwiches for two people to eat at one time.

This is a Keeper! Great anytime but on cold winter afternoons/evenings this Ultimate ( 3 cheese ) Grilled cheese sandwich tastes fantastic paired with a steaming hot bowl of ( any type ) tomato soup! Or any other soup... Thank you for this ( and countless other ) great recipes! My family loves this recipe, ages range from toddlers to Seniors! this! YUM!

I had to find out what makes this grilled cheese "ultimate." Now I know!

This looks dangerously delicious! I might cut back on the mayo because I'm not a huge fan of it.

This is so yummy, I cut back on the mayo and softened the cream cheese a bit more in the microwave but no to make it melty. Thick sliced sourdough from Panera Bread made this insanely delicious!!

I made these sandwiches with some tomato soup and it was good. But for me it was a little too rich for my liking, I might just cut back on the mayo next time..but overall it does deserve 5 stars!!

I like your suggestion. These look great and I think tomato is a great addition to it I might use soften sun dried tomatoes instead.

Taste awesome when it is hot and gooie...

I bet this would be great on the panini press

I was never fond of grilled cheese, and I had to slather it in peanut butter to make it worth eating. I tried this recipe yesterday, on 12 grain bread, and it is terrific. No peanut butter needed!

Why does an ad come on everytime I download a recipe (this one for the grilled cheese) and covers up part of the recipe. This one says "download a free Greek e-cookbook" This happens quite often and often covers a good portion of the recipe ingredients.

The ads are very annoying but you can avoid some of them by not allowing your cursor to go over any underlined word.

I use a piece of free software called AdBlockPlus that integrates with my browser. It spares me a lot of unwanted ads, pop-ups, and redirects, and you can easily set it to allow those things on sites where you might want them.

I have Norton 360 and I have never even seen any ads when I add a recipe to my recipe box or print a recipe out. But. I do read quite a few people on here complaining about it

There is an X at the top of the ad you can remove it if you don't want to watch it.

I keep the filling ready for when too lazy to cook and fold into tortillas and grill and have a salad with it

If you add a small jar of well drained pimentos to this recipe you end up with food that angels seek. The filling with pimentos makes a pretty good pimento cheese! Super good recipe! The use of sourdough bread adds just the right amount of bright bready flavor!

Does any one know if I can mix up the filling and keep it in the fridge to use as needed? If so, any ideas on how long it would keep?

Yes, you can make this cheese well in advance. Just keep it cold in the fridge. In a closed container it should keep for weeks.

Howard mentioned the "Quick And Easy Comfort Cookbook" on the show today and said the ultimate grilled cheese sandwich was in it. So I looked for that cookbook (even did a search for it) and found nothing. Anyone know where I can get a copy?

Any lunch meat around slide it in, knock it up notch, ant other cheese knock up notch!!!!!

I'm making my grocery list for the week & this will be on it! All I need is the mozz & sour dough bread!

I make triple batches and put it on everything we used to put cheese on, homemade egg muffins, burgers, hot dogs, and whatever else we used to put cheese on.

I have made this sandwich several times. It is delicious. Instead of sourdough bread, I just use my favorite high-grain bread. I leave out the garlic, but I'm sure it's great with it, too.
