Different regions of the country have their own way of making baked beans. This recipe for Southern Baked Beans is cooked up Southern-style, which means that it's flavored with classic ingredients that add just a bit of sweetness.

What You'll Need

  • 1 (15-1/2-ounce) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 (15-1/2-ounce) can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 (12-ounce) jar chili sauce
  • 3/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground mustard

What to Do

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Coat an 8-inch square baking dish with cooking spray.

  2. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients. Pour into baking dish.

  3. Bake 50 to 60 minutes, or until beans are bubbly and sauce has thickened.

I have company over frequently during the summer grilling season, and I like this baked beans recipe so much that I make two batches of it. One just like this, and one with bacon. I take about 4 strips of bacon and microwave it for a couple of minutes before cutting it up and adding it to the mixture before baking. It gives it great bacon flavor without making the sauce too greasy.

Easy and inexpensive and as good as "whoever's best." I used red (not kidney) beans and pinto beans but any combo should work. Only had about 2/3 jar of chili sauce so I cut the catsup back just a bit. Added a little chopped ham (bacon would be even better). This amount fit perfectly in a mini-crock pot (about 4 hr) and served 3-4.

Thank you for posting your crock pot method. I have a small crock and love it, but I sometimes wonder if a recipe is adaptable to a crock.

We found this recipe great!!!

Not a fan of kidney beans. Can I use a different kind?

Hi there! Yes, you can replace the kidney beans in this recipe with any kind of bean that you like. The Test Kitchen recommends pinto, great Northern or white beans as an equivalent substitution. Enjoy!

I usually use Red beans, or "pink" beans if you can find them, whenever kidney beans are called for.

I've been searching for a baked bean recipe I can call my own. It's time I have a tried and true recipe to make every time instead of a hit and miss. The video explained to me the differences between a few baked bean recipes, which was interesting. Southern beans have chili sauce and some other regional beans start with a tomato base.
