You control the spice in this delicious take on a classic dinner favorite. Rachael Ray shares her secret for making Tex-Mex Sloppy Joes perfect for your taste buds!

What You'll Need

  • 4 slices bacon
  • 1 pound ground sirloin beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 cup beer
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce
  • 4 burger rolls, toasted

What to Do

  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook bacon about 5 minutes, or until crisp. Remove to a paper towel-lined plate to cool, then crumble.
  2. Add beef, salt, and pepper to skillet and cook 5 to 7 minutes, or until browned. Stir in onion, jalapeno pepper, garlic, chili powder, and cumin. Cook 3 to 5 minutes, or until onion is softened.
  3. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine beer, tomato sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce. Pour mixture into skillet, add bacon, and simmer 5 to 10 minutes. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture on to rolls and serve.

Notes

  • Top sloppy joes with corn chips, pickled jalapeno rings, and sweet red pepper relish for that authentic Tex-Mex flavor!

LORD YES IT WAS EASY TO MAKE AND TASTED GOOD AS WELL

This looks like an easy, filling recipe!

There is very little grease from 4 slices of bacon. The ground beef is SiRLOIN,,which is soo lean; We loved this recipe, as it was a great change from boring sloppy Joes;Kids wanted to eat it with corn chips!Minimum grease- only 4 slices of bacon, and ground sirloin is LEAN

Keep this in mind. Each slice of bacon contains at least 240 grams of sodium at a minimum. If you are watching your sodium intake, these 4 slices of bacon represent approximately 960 grams of sodium. Turkey bacon has 180 grams per slice of sodium or 720 grams for this recipe. In either case, that's a lot of sodium to consume.

you are not eating an entire slice of bacon just a little bit of it

What can I substitute for the beer?

If you prefer not to use beer, you can substitute with equal amount of beef broth. Thank you for your question, enjoy!

Must be really greasy, what with all that bacon grease and ground beef grease.

I see that this recipe really brought the food police out of the woodwork! Why don't you people get a life?

Is there anything you could subtitute for the beer?

They said you could substitute stock for the beer.

Should call them :"Sloppy Jose's"

That is funny, thank you for sharing!
