All-American Pudding Cake

Hooray for the red, white, and blue! Our All-American Pudding Cake will surely earn you your baking stars and stripes! This scrumptious homemade poke cake, filled with creamy pudding, is a delight for your senses!
What You'll Need
- 1 (18.25-ounce) package white cake mix
- 25 drops red food coloring
- 25 drops blue food coloring
- 1 (4-serving-size) package instant vanilla pudding mix
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1 (12-ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
- Red, white, and blue sprinkles for garnish
What to Do
- Prepare cake mix according to package directions for 2 (8-inch) round cake pans.
- Divide batter evenly between 2 bowls. Stir red food coloring into one bowl of batter, and blue food coloring into second bowl. Pour each bowl of cake batter into an 8-inch round cake pan.
- Bake according to package directions; let cool 15 minutes. Using a straw or wooden spoon handle, poke about 15 holes randomly in each cake layer.
- In a medium bowl, combine pudding mix and milk; whisk just until pudding starts to thicken. (Pudding should be pourable.) Slowly pour pudding into holes of both cake layers. Refrigerate 1 hour.
- Place 1 cake layer on serving platter and frost with whipped topping. Place second cake layer on top and frost top and sides with remaining whipped topping. Garnish with sprinkles and refrigerate until ready to serve.

I tries this & got a pink & green cake. I bought a Pillsbury Classic White mix & the batter was yellow so the blue coloring made it green as did the red turn pink. Can somone PLEASE tell me what cake exactly to use??

Hi cjpatriots 3760907, Sometimes it's a challenge to determine what happened when we're not in the kitchen with you. We have two ideas of what may have gone wrong. Is it possible that you added the instant vanilla cake mix to the batter? This would have turned the batter more yellow than white. Many recipes use this method, rather than pouring the prepared pudding into holes in the layers, like we have done in this recipe. The other possibility is if you did not use the correct amount of food coloring. Or could the food coloring have been older? We have prepared this cake a number of times, using Pillsbury Classic White Cake mix in the Test Kitchen and this has never happened. We hope this helps! Thank you!

Thank you for the feedback. To answer your question about adding the pudding mix to the batter, No I perepared the cake mix exactly according to the box directions. The batter was yellow... before the food coloring...

If you used whole eggs in the cake mix instead of just the egg whites, the cake mix will have a yellowish color also. Doesn't hurt to use the whole egg unless you really want a white cake.

Cake is good; however the directions should read cool cake and remove from pans for newer cooks. Thanks for the neat recipes. We will enjoy this on the 4th!

Yes, when the recipe says "bake according to package direction" it means if the box cake mix states "grease and or flour pans" then you follow those directions. Same goes for time and temp.
