Do you have a "Nonny" who always bakes up something special when you go to visit? Whether you do or you don't, you're going to enjoy Nonny's Lemon Cookies, full of citrusy flavors (thanks to her secret ingredient!) and Italian goodness.

What You'll Need

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon extract
  • Sprinkles for decorating

What to Do

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat baking sheets with cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and baking powder. Add eggs, oil, orange juice, and vanilla; mix well. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto baking sheets, one inch apart.
  3. Bake about 10 minutes, or until light brown. Remove to a wire rack to cool completely.
  4. Meanwhile, in a bowl, mix confectioners' sugar, milk, and lemon extract. Dip tops of cookies in icing, and top with sprinkles.

Thank you Mr. Food Test Kitchen for this wonderful recipe for authentic Italian cookies. Lemon and orange are popular additions in Southern Italian recipes for cookies, cakes, etc. This recipe is very nice because because the cookies have the flavor of both the lemon extract and orange juice. My Mom and grandmothers also often added a little grated orange rind or lemon rind to cookies and plain cakes. Your recipes bring back many happy memories! Rachel
