Old-Fashioned Coleslaw

Remember when making homemade coleslaw meant getting out the hand grater? Well, today's convenient packaged coleslaw mixes let us say good-bye to scraped knuckles yet turn out Old-Fashioned Coleslaw in a snap.
What You'll Need
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 2 teaspoons white vinegar
- 1/2 teaspoon celery seed (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 (16-ounce) package shredded coleslaw mix (see Note)
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
What to Do
- In a large bowl, combine mayonnaise, milk, sugar, mustard, vinegar, celery seed, if desired, salt, and pepper; mix well. Add coleslaw mix and green pepper; toss to mix well.
- Serve immediately, or cover and chill until ready to serve.
Note
- Sure, you can shred your own cabbage, if you'd prefer. About 4 cups of it, with a little shredded carrot for color, will take the place of the packaged mix here.

Similar to my mother's famous coleslaw. She ALWAYS used milk. She sliced her own cabbage "with lightening!" That meant very, very thin. Also, wish we could stop the world from adding carrot "for color". Believe it or not, there are many people who are allergic to carrot. (ME) I can almost never enjoy any salad that I don't make myself. And I do make my own.

My mother used to toss in some chopped walnuts also, but I don't recall her ever using bell pepper, I will have to try that!

Old Fashioned Coleslaw recipe WHY MILK?? I agree with all the other ingredients - except milk. No one in my family ever used milk in cole slaw or potato salad. NOW - in the 21st century I am seeing "milk" in "dressing" recipes. Just what does milk add? Wouldn't the vinegar make the milk curdle? I would use "Seasoned Rice Vinegar" instead of white vinegar. "Seasoned Rice Vinegar" sure does ADD flavor to all kinds of things! Anymore - I add a bit of it to chili, soup, and many other foods. Try it! -)

I substitute celery salt for the plain salt and leave out the bell pepper. Also add a bit of sweet relish sometimes. If the packaged slaw mix is too coarse, get out the kitchen shears.

I have been making my coleslaw with all the same ingredients using grated cabbage and grated carrots instead of the green peppers for years. My family loves it.

This is a good recipe for coleslaw, but is missing one ingredient, in my opinion, that takes it from 3 star to 5 star. To me, coleslaw is not coleslaw without celery seed. Next time you make this recipe, end with celery seed. It make a world of difference, and is delicious.

If you're shredding (I use a food chopper) the cabbage, put about half of a dark green cabbage leaf in it to enhance color.

Just whipped this up...hard to type...can't stop eating it...yum! Excellent recipe. I didn't include the green pepper (I've never had that in slaw) and substituted the White Vinegar with 2 tsp. Balsamic Vinegar. End result is a tangy, slightly sweet variation of some great old fashioned coleslaw. I'd recommend it!

I was thinking of using white wine vinegar instead of the white vinegar. I'm sure apple cider vinegar would be good as well. You can add different vinegars and mustards to change it up a bit. I would use Dijon in mine.
