Frozen Mud Pie is a crunchy-sweet treat that'll take you back to childhood. This tastes even better with a glass of cold milk.
What You'll Need
- 1 tablespoon instant coffee granules
- 3 tablespoons coffee-flavored liqueur (see Option)
- 1 quart chocolate ice cream, softened
- 1 container (8 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed and divided
- 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons chopped pecans, divided
- 1 prepared 9-inch chocolate graham cracker pie crust
- 1/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips, melted
What to Do
- In a large bowl, dissolve the coffee granules in the coffee liqueur. Add the ice cream, half of the whipped topping, and 1/2 cup pecans; mix well. Pour into the pie crust, cover, and freeze for at least 4 hours.
- Top with the remaining whipped topping and sprinkle with the remaining 2 tablespoons pecans.
- Drizzle with the melted chocolate, and freeze for 4 more hours, or until firm. Serve, or cover and keep frozen until ready to serve.
Option
If you don’t have coffee-flavored liqueur on hand, you can dissolve the coffee granules in a tablespoon of hot water.

I think you could substitute real sweetened whipped cream in this recipe. Whipped egg whites would not be safe in my opinion as they are raw eggs and you wouldn't cook the meringue on an ice cream pie. If you are worried about the ingredients in whipped topping, chances are you won't eat ice cream either. Although there are some whipped toppings in the freezer section with "real cream" in them now, most are non-dairy. Whipped topping like this does NOT come from cows. I have not made this pie but I have to rate it to reply?

Sorry, Cool Whip is Horrible For Your Health. It's ingredients include hydrogenated vegetable oil and high fructose corn syrup. Go with real whipped cream!

Will have to research, but while it will be more of a pudding-like icing rather than a fluffy whipped-cream-type topping, I would substitute a yogurt-based topping, for example, plain non-fat greek-style yogurt with vanilla added and confectioner's sugar (to taste--I use about 3 oz per 2 cups of yogurt) would make a very nice rich vanilla topping. If you want to simulate sour cream (not sure why?), then add a tablespoon of baking soda per cup of yogurt--it will 'rise' to about twice its volume. If you really want something light and fluffy, then it's probably worth whipping up a meringue. (Egg-whites and sugar....)but I suspect that may not go well with an ice-cream-based pie.

Hello, Yes. Frozen whipped topping is Cool Whip. It comes under other name brands also, just look around in the vacinity of where the Cool Whip is stocked in your store's dairy freezer. Cheaper brand names or generic brands are just as good if not better and much cheaper. It all comes from a cow no matter what brand name it comes under. Hope this helps you out. God bless...
