Whip up our easy Icebox Salad the next time you've got company coming over and get ready to take in all the "oohs" and "aahs." This make-ahead, layered salad is both pretty and delicious. It's the all-American, hearty salad that everyone grew up eating, but in a party-size form!

What You'll Need

  • 2 cups mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 head iceberg lettuce, chopped
  • 2 red bell peppers, finely chopped
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 (9-ounce) package frozen green peas, thawed and drained
  • 3 celery stalks, finely chopped
  • 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 1 (3-ounce) container real bacon bits

What to Do

  1. In a medium bowl, combine mayonnaise, sour cream, and garlic powder; mix well.

  2. In a large glass bowl, layer half the lettuce, bell pepper, onion, peas, celery, mayonnaise mixture, and cheese. Repeat layers once more then top with bacon bits.

  3. Cover and chill at least 2 hours before serving. Toss just before serving.

Note

  • Using a trifle dish or large glass bowl with straight sides allows us to see all the colorful layers of this salad.

This looks delicious! The only problem i have is that it's hard to get out and it gets all messed up when people are scooping it out. I think a wider, shallower container would be better and then use a pancake turner to scoop out a section, rather than a big spoon that smooshes it all up. Anybody know how to keep this neat looking so the last person gets a fresh portion that doesn't look like it's gone through a snowblower?

Hi there! The Test Kitchen recommends that you toss this salad before serving (Step #3) in order to ensure that all of the ingredients are mixed well. Enjoy!

My mother would make this for family get togethers. My grandmother would call everyone to come to the table to admire the salad, which was immediately followed by the tossing "ceremony". Something we had fun with. Mom liked this salad because she could make it ahead before anyone arrived. Start a tradition with a salad tossing ceremony.

Excellent meal! Last time I made this I put some small pieces of cauliflower and thin sliced baby carrots in with the bell peppers and then garnished the top with some cucumber slices and grape tomatoes. My roommate NEVER eats veggies, this was gone in a flash and I have been asked to make it again! Thank you Mr. Food!
