What makes Grandma's Macaroni and Cheese so special? Well, besides the fact that it reminds us of all the love we get from Grandma, it's also full of extra-cheesy yumminess. This homemade macaroni and cheese even has one surprising ingredient that makes it even better!
What You'll Need
- 1 (16-ounce) package elbow macaroni
- 2 (10-3/4-ounce) cans condensed Cheddar cheese soup
- 2 cups milk
- 6 cups (1-1/2 pounds) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese, reserving 1 cup for topping
- 3 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 1/2 teaspoons dry mustard
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 teaspoon black pepper
What to Do
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9- x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
- Cook macaroni according to package directions; drain and place back into pot. Stir in remaining ingredients except reserved cheese.
- Pour mixture into prepared baking dish and sprinkle with reserved cheese. Bake 35 to 40 minutes, or until heated through.

Oh my goodness, I was very skeptical about this recipe due to the fact it had canned soup as an ingredient. Having not ever used canned Cheddar Cheese soup I wasn't sure what to expect but seeing the other great reviews I thought it would be worth a try. This is now my go to recipe from here on out. We loved it! I used an English cheddar and 2 sharp cheddar cheeses that I had on hand. I did add 2 minced garlic cloves. Try this recipe folks you WILL love it. Oh also I did add a Panko crumb topping to give this dish some crunch.

I made this for supper today and it was so good. I had to divide the recipe since there is only 2 of us and it still made too much. Hoping it will reheat well.

Has anyone used buttermilk in your Mac and cheese recipe? I am looking for a recipe that uses it. A friend mentioned it but I am not sure I want to take the chance. I dislike wasting food.

This is a good starter recipe. I have added a few things to make it even better. I use a variety of shredded cheeses, Colby Jack, and a Mozzarella. Then I add an egg to the canned soup before adding it. Also sprinkle a fair amount of Garlic Powder into the mixture and top evenything off with a thin layer of bread crums and the cheese. Makes it so much better. Try it!

Yes, my mother always added an egg to bind it together. Martha Stewart used Cayenne pepper in her mac and cheese. That is good, also.

Oh yes Campbells had the Cheddar Cheese Canned Soup back in the late 60's because I used to make this very same recipe for my family.

TO those who think grandma may have not of had the Campbells Cheddar Cheese Canned soup available way back when....I grew up on this FABULOUS MAC AN CHEESE! My moms in her late 80s and this was the only version we knew.. ours was the basic version.. 1 cup dry macaroni boiled...add 1 can cheddar cheese soup...add one half soup can of mil(use campbells soup can to measure milk) dot with butter salt pepper...bake eat luv! In fact in the early 80s I took this mainstay to college...sorority sister with a real Italian family raved about this to her Italian momma...much to my chagrin.. We didn't always get the deluxe version with added cheese or mustard but the basic is darn good too!

I was disappointed to see canned cheese soup in the recipe. I doubt my gramma would have used that since they didn't make that back then.
