Our Pasta Rustica features a homemade sauce that's so tasty and easy to make, you'll never buy the stuff in a jar again. And because it comes together in just 30 minutes, making a homemade scratch dinner, that's full of restaurant-quality Italian flavors, has never been so easy. So, boil that water and throw in the pasta because it's time to eat!

What You'll Need

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup pitted ripe olives, halved
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 3/4 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup coarsely chopped basil leaves
  • 1 pound spaghetti, cooked according to package directions

What to Do

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat oil until hot; add onion and garlic and saute 3 to 5 minutes or until softened.
  2. Stir in crushed tomatoes, olives, salt, and pepper; cook 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add sugar and chicken broth; cook 10 more minutes or until heated through, stirring occasionally. Stir in basil and serve over spaghetti.

I add pork bones to my sauce, as well (from a little italian lady I once knew) and add some red wine to the sauce . . . also add a little oregano and basil and garnish with parsley . . .

I lived next door to an older lady who was from Italy and she told me to always put pork "BONES" in my sauce. Just the bones, no meat. She said this is what they did in Italy! The best sauce I have ever made or had. So just add some pork bones to this sauce and let it simmer. It will be delicous.

if broth is required, I'd try vegetable broth instead

Hi everyone I'm going to try this recipe and I'll let you know it goes. Very good point janywill1. I'll try it first before I add chicken broth and pour slowly a little at a time and see what taste. Good sounding recipe and good advice janywill1

I think using chicken broth ruins this good recipe. I make my own sauce always and never use chicken broth in it. Why does everything call for it anymore?
