Cuban Sandwich

Cuban Sandwich

The Cubano or Cuban Sandwich is a popular ethnic favorite in Miami's Little Havana, and it is easy to recreate at home. We recommend serving these up with crunchy plantain chips for extra tasty enjoyment.

What You'll Need

  • 1/4 cup yellow mustard
  • 1 loaf Cuban bread, sliced in half horizontally (see Note)
  • 8 thin dill pickle slices
  • 1/2 pound deli baked ham, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 pound deli roast pork, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices (1/2 pound) Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter

What to Do

  1. Spread mustard evenly on both sides of bread. Layer bottom half with pickles, ham, pork then cheese. Replace top half of bread and cut into 4 sandwiches.
  2. Spread butter on top and bottom of sandwiches and grill in a hot panini press or grill pan until cheese is melted and bread is golden. Slice in half and serve immediately.

You can use Italian or French bread instead of Cuban, if you prefer.

Thanks for the recipe. The last good Cuban sandwich I had was in South Dade County and I'm looking forward to making one soon.

it sure does have a different taste ( cuban bread) from the french or italian breadas around here.

If you are not in Fla. or near a cuban community you can check out a cuban cookbook for the recipie for cuban bread .the taste is markedly different from french or italian breads . I am in alaska and so far from Tampa Fla where I once lived so that is the only way I can get the cuban breads for my beloved recipies

winn- dixie stores sell cuban bread

In Tampa, we use roast Cuban pork for a more original taste. It is available at most grocery store deli counters. Cuban culture and FOOD is available in our area. Thank you, Mr. Food for a great site and fantastic recipes.
