Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches

Our Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches is the closest you can get to "the real thing" without taking a trip to the city! This traditional recipe is melt-in-your mouth delicious and takes just 10 minutes to make. All you need to do is heat up your tasty ingredients in a skillet before creating your sandwich. Our secret ingredient? Cheez wiz! It might sound strange, but this combo is absolutely delicious.
What You'll Need
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 1 1/4 pounds beef top round, thinly sliced (see Note)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 4 hoagie rolls, split
- 1 cup Cheez Whiz, melted
What to Do
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat oil until hot. Add onions, and saute 6 to 8 minutes, or until onions are tender. Transfer to a bowl and set aside.
- Add beef to skillet and sprinkle with salt and black pepper; saute 3 to 5 minutes, or until no pink remains in beef. Transfer to a cutting board and cut steak into very thin strips, almost shaved.
- Place steak on hoagie rolls, top with onions and drizzle with melted cheese, serve Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches immediately.
Notes
- The easiest way to get thinly sliced beef top round is to ask the butcher at the supermarket to do it for you.
- Not a fan of Cheez Wiz? Some people prefer to make these Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches with Velveetva Cheese instead.

Instead of top round use thinly sliced rib eye to really make it authentic. There's nothing better.

easy for children to make and enjoy learning to cook. We used other cheese to try something different and put their on twist on this. Great recipe

Delicious, I added some chopped mushroom and also chopped the onions and peppers before sauteeing. I use Provolone cheese, I am not from Philadelphia so we eat them this way!!

Pizza Steak Hogies did have tomatoe sause (marinara) and mozzarella cheese and were very popular in Phila and surrounding areas in most any Deli or eatery that made hogies back in the 50's and 60's when I was growing up there.

there is never ever bell pepper on an authentic Philadelphia Cheese Steak, ever. Fried Onions, Cheese Whiz which not Velveeta or Provolone Cheese, maybe American. No BELL PEPPERS!!!!!! I would give it a zero star if I could.

Nowhere in the recipe does it call for bell pepper. It says "black" pepper, not "bell".

My Wife and I are originally from the Philadelphia area and never was Cheez Whiz EVER used, but American & provolone cheeses whe used by all the steakshops, except only 1 in Philly. That was an enigma why they'd ruin a good thing.

Actually Cheez Whiz is used on the real cheesesteak in Philly...They give you a choice of Cheez Whiz, American, or Provolone. But a true cheesesteak lover would usually get it with the Cheez Whiz. Why not do research before slamming something....

The True cheesesteak is with American and then covered by the bun to melt it. Cheez Whiz is only offered to those who do not want to wait for the American to melt, or because they think they get more with the whiz cause it is offered after the fact when the sandwich is offered to you, sort of like an after thought. Check out the Ohio Street Cheesesteak and there is not any whiz there, and it IS original cheesesteak.

A Philly cheesesteak made with Cheez Whiz? I think not. Anyone in Philadelphia would be aghast if you tried to pass this off as a true Philly cheesesteak. It might be cheese and it might be steak, but it's not Philly cheesesteak.

the easiest way to get thin sliced beef is not to ask butcher the easiest way is to go to the deli and grab some roastbeef. not only is it yummy but it's not as expensive as a steak, but just as good!!!
