Remember Sloppy Joes? Our Turkey Joes are a take-off on the traditional, with the lighter twist of ground turkey substituted for ground beef. The flavor remains strong and tasty.

What You'll Need

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped celery
  • 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • black pepper to taste
  • dash hot pepper sauce (optional)

What to Do

  1. In a large skillet, heat oil; add turkey and brown. Add onion, celery, green pepper, and garlic and saute 5 minutes, stirring often.
  2. Mix in remaining ingredients and simmer uncovered 30 minutes.



Serve on buttered, toasted buns.

Test Kitchen Team: I hear what you say but I followed your recipe exactly as you gave it. I simmered it for more than 30 minutes, uncovered just to try and get rid of some of the liquid but that did not work. We will have to agree to disagree on this recipe.

DON'T MAKE THIS RECIPE. I followed it exactly and I ended up with what I can only describe as "ground turkey soup". I ended up draining the entire mess after it was cooked and ended up with 1-1/4 cups of liquid. Nothing you could ever put on a bun. Fortunately I had a bottle of barbeque sauce on hand which I added to the cooked ground turkey/celery/onion/green pepper mixture so as not to lose the whole thing and it was then saveable.

Hi noah11 7976731, When we received your comments, we took this recipe back to the Test Kitchen. When we initially added all of the ingredients, there was a bit of liquid. However, after it simmered for 30 minutes, the majority of the liquids had cooked down and the texture was perfect for a Sloppy Joe. If it did not simmer for the entire 30 minutes, this may be where there was an issue. Also, you would want this to be uncovered so the liquid can evaporate. We hope this helps and that you continue to try and enjoy all of the wonderful recipes here on our site!
